Licorice and licorice derivatives

CAS 1407-03-0

Licorice and its extracts are flavourings and sweeteners. The sweetness comes from glycyrrhizin, which is far sweeter than sugar; it is also the reason intake is capped, since it affects potassium and blood pressure at high doses.

Where it is and isn’t permitted

Status of Licorice and licorice derivatives by jurisdiction. Every jurisdiction this site covers is listed, including those where the substance does not appear.

What it is made from

Extracted from the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra. Deglycyrrhizinated extracts exist where the flavour is wanted without the active compound.
