E numbers

226 substances in this index carry an E number. The E prefix is the European designation for a number that is otherwise the international INS number — E200 and INS 200 are the same substance, and this site treats them as one.

An E number is an identifier, not a verdict. It says a substance has been assessed and given a designation; it says nothing on its own about where it is permitted.
