Propylparaben is a preservative permitted in food in the United States. The European Union removed propyl and its salt from its food additive list in 2006 after re-evaluation, so this is a clear case where two regulators reached different conclusions and neither has moved.
Where it is and isn’t permitted
| Jurisdiction | Status | Scope and limits | Citation |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Permitted | 21 CFR 184.1670retrieved 2026-09-07 | |
| Codex Alimentarius | Not listedDoes not appear on this jurisdiction’s permitted list. That is not the same as being prohibited. |
What it is made from
Made by reacting para-hydroxybenzoic acid with propanol. Parabens also occur naturally in some plants.
