What it is made from

Made by treating lecithin with phospholipase enzymes, which cleave part of the molecule and make it more water-loving. The lecithin itself is usually soy or sunflower derived.

    In a follow-up covering infants below 16 weeks, the FAF Panel concluded that lecithins (E 322) in infant formula and special medical foods do not raise safety concerns up to the maximum permitted level, having compared choline levels with those in human milk. It considered it feasible to amend the specifications for toxic elements and add limits for cadmium and microbiological criteria.

    The ANS Panel concluded that no numerical ADI is needed for lecithins (E 322) and that there is no safety concern for the general population over one year of age at the refined exposure assessment, including for choline released from lecithins. It reached the same conclusion for infants from 12 weeks and for infants and young children consuming foods for special medical purposes.
