Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code

Food Standards Australia New Zealand · Australia and New Zealand

One instrument for two countries. Standard 1.3.1 permits additives; the schedules carry the detail.

Two exceptions to inheritance are coded here because the Code states them: butter inherits nothing, and coconut milk takes no colourings from above.

How it is arranged

  • Standard 1.3.1 — the permission to use additives and the conditions on it.
  • Schedule 15 — additives permitted in each class of food, with maximum levels.
  • Schedule 16 — additives permitted at good manufacturing practice.
  • The food classes are hierarchical, so a permission for a class reaches those beneath it, with named exceptions.

What this site takes from it

Schedules 15 and 16 as permissions, with the inheritance rule and its exceptions.

And what it does not

Processing aids, which Schedule 18 handles separately.
